Greetings Potential Students!
We know many of you have been gearing your students toward Hogwarts. It’s a popular school! And a lot of canon history is embedded into it, but we have just one problem…
The main plot for this site revolves around three schools coming together for the Tri-Wizarding Tournament. This means that if a majority of students are at Hogwarts then we have a huge imbalance, especially considering many of the limitations Hogwarts comes with as far as drawing in students.
So let us explain a few things! Please read this update thoroughly.
Hogwarts is a very fine school. It has plenty of history, is considered one of the finest in Europe, and also has its name spread across much of the wizarding world. People know Hogwarts, but that doesn’t make it the ideal school for each student. It also seeks out many of its students within the UK. Most schools are filled by students who live in relatively the same area unless the parents of the student actively seeks out a specific school. Think of, say… out-of-state tuition.
And remember: just because Hogwarts is famous doesn’t mean a family would want their child/children to go there.
Durmstrang is known for taking international students. Their location is a secret, their history is deep, and their tradition is strong. They have a much deeper history than most schools -- including Hogwarts -- and do not accept Muggleborns into their school. Many prestigious families are contacted by a personal messenger with a request to attend Durmstrang. This messenger is the person who will escort them personally to where they will be picked up to go to the institution. There is much mystery within this school, and also much power. Though many disagree with their teaching of the Dark Arts, there are some families who may see this open teaching as a way to avoid their child/children from delving into them per curiosity rather than a supervised study. There are almost no reports of anyone using the Dark Arts for foul means aside from a teacher who was deemed venturing too deep into his studies of them and was promptly removed.
Durmstrang may have strict rules, but the school is highly accomplished and has seen many of its graduates become accomplished wizards and witches. It is not a school to be taken lightly, and it is also one of the most highly-protected schools due to its secrecy. Durmstrang believes that powerful magic also comes from a strong body and a strong mind. It is one of the only schools that requires physical training courses (more or less P.E. unless one desires something more intense) and its teaching level is often geared toward challenging students. The lack of outside influence is believed to help students focus.
Beauxbatons is also a highly-accomplished school, teaching not only magic but also helping its students learn to better integrate into the muggle world. Beauxbatons has developed a respect for muggle culture and has come to the conclusion that the best future for any witch or wizard will be to aid in their endeavors to ultimately blend and be part of the muggles rather than settle in isolation. Like Durmstrang, Beauxbatons is an international school, and it accepts students from all over Western and Central Europe. Beauxbatons differs in its methods of inviting students, preferring not to seek out the best but to invite all. They have fewer restrictions, accepting Muggle-borns, and have dozens of special wizarding posts across Europe for students who need transport. Each of these locations is headed by a messenger, who oversees a specific region of known wizarding families or potentially magical children, and it is through these messengers that prospective students are gathered to these specific locations for shuttling to Beauxbatons in the Pyrenees. Students from other parts of the world will not receive invitations to attend Beauxbatons, but parents from any country are free to petition the school to take their child. Beauxbatons begins teaching students at age twelve, leaving an extra year for parents to prepare their children. Hopefully soon even more information will be available to you all as the school continues being developed! (Also, remember Nicolas Flamel? That guy who made the Philosopher’s Stone? He went to Beauxbatons!)
There is more unity in Beauxbatons. Belladone is the most competitive house, but the school overall embraces togetherness and encourages its students to get along with each other. Despite the joking criticisms aimed towards Hogwarts, the two schools share with each other a healthy and good-natured rivalry. It doesn’t stop students from being incredibly bothered by the extreme change in environment.
We request that people really look into the other schools and remember that -- though Hogwarts is exceptional and rather famous -- students are typically geared toward other schools by their parents and/or families. It is not the student’s choice as to where they go, though they may request something different.
However, once a school is chosen and they have been placed into a House, transfers are very rare. It is a lot of work to get them moved into another school, filling out the paperwork and seeing what classes may transfer, and note that they may lose their Familiar and have to be assigned to a new House. It is also not the student’s choice, but the parent’s as to whether or not they may transfer. Then it is also up to the schools on whether or not to accept a transfer student, and it is typically not something that is allowed. The only situation in which a student may leave a school without parental consent is if they are kicked out, and then it is unlikely that another school will pick them up.
Cases of severe bullying, trauma due to an event, and sudden parental intervention because of a disagreement with teaching methods (such as the teaching of Dark Arts at Durmstrang, though it is known ahead of time that it is not a mandatory class) are the only times one may transfer. But even then most of these things can be adjusted within the school per request, especially in the case of bullying or need to avoid a certain other because of conflict.
Basically: transfers are not taken lightly.
Now, with all that said… A cap has been placed on all schools.
Every school House allows for 4 students each.
This does not apply to Slytherin due to several plots revolved around students within that particular House, but it is capped at 5.
If we get an even balance of students before the caps are reached we may lift these caps entirely.
We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
If you have any questions about the other two schools that you do not see written anywhere then please feel free to ask! Misso did much of the design for Beauxbatons and Eli handled much of Durmstrang. You can reach them either through the Cbox below or by PMing their accounts! Or even Skype if you have them! They are always excited to give you any information you want about these schools and to get you started on plenty of plots and exciting details about these wonderful schools!
We look forward to seeing what you do!
