A total lie.
Arthur- contrary to belief- is actually filled with flaws. Astonishing, right? We thought so, too.
Arthur is ambitious, but for entirely different reasons. He strives to be the best, but not necessarily out of the desire to be the best. He simply has the goal of becoming a powerful wizard to achieve one particular goal, and he will stop at nothing to succeed.
While it is true that he is intelligent, he actually has more book smarts than common sense. He studies his brains out rather than his heart and can often suffer from exhaustion and has difficulties taking care of himself. His ambition might just be his undoing, but still he tries. That, and there is a fear in failure.
It is a heavy burden to be the “heir” to a famous pureblood family. You have to really make a name for yourself, and for Arthur that has been something that has been forcibly carved into his very heart, mind, and soul. Failure is not an option and is often rewarded with Howlers from his mother. Both she and his desire to get away— oops, pretend you didn’t read that— are what keep him going. This is what makes him an excellent student, even if he has trouble functioning as a normal human being.
That being said, he has difficulty getting along with others. He has a rather sour personality and finds most people irritating. He’s been taught to only befriend those of use- namely other purebloods. His stand-offish demeanor, however, puts him at odds even with the other Slytherin. Despite his family’s standing and the fact that he’s been named “heir”, it isn’t often even others closer to his position can get along with him. Even family can get on his nerves a great deal, and as such he often prefers to be by himself and studying.
Still, that doesn’t mean he can’t get along with others. He actually enjoys company despite his protests. It usually takes someone with a strong personality to tolerate him and be around him. After a while he’ll stop being so adamant about escaping them and just settle for grumbling about how annoying they are. This is when you know he has settled into being friends with someone, though it won’t be without its bumps. He still has his horrible personality.
Now, that isn’t to say he’s incapable of acts of kindness. Arthur simply doesn’t like being in the spotlight so he’ll often slip gifts to others when they aren’t around. Burntpaperweights treats, store-bought real treats, and other things the other might want or need. He does try, not that it always seems that way. Typically consider anything hand-made as the closest you will ever come to a legitimately sincere gift.
Unfortunately, his flaws run deeper than what’s openly visible. His temper for one! He can get snippy with others and be grouchy, but that’s his normal personality. That’s not him being angry. When he gets mad he can lose touch with his common sense. Arthur has a tendency to go overboard. He isn’t above using small tournaments or any type of studies to use magic against someone “on accident”. In a duel, however, he may also get carried away and legitimately try to harm someone.
Not to mention he is prone to using Dark Arts, though these are typically reserved for anywhere there aren’t prying eyes.

Iain- the eldest- wasn’t “suitable heir material”. He had been chosen for the Gryffindor House for one, and secondly he just wasn’t the “type”. Rowdy, rough, and not afraid to speak his mind. Even if their father loved him… apparently he just wasn’t suitable.
This occurrence happened several times through the family as Elliot Kirkland found women he loved and created children he adored. It was never a matter of how much he cared for them, though. It was all about precision. Accuracy. A child they could easily mold… That’s heir material! Or so the woman named Loraine Blackwater believed.
There was nothing more repulsive than a child with its own will. Children were meant to be molded into whatever the parents desired. Loraine sought perfection and obedience. She urged Elliot to seek the same, though the man only seemed to cared for the children’s happiness. It was unfortunate that he was hardly around, giving Loraine the reins to direct their children however she pleased while he was away. This became the one of the largest impacts on the Kirkland family, especially within Loraine’s two sons.
One thing of note about this particular branch of the family: Loraine Blackwater- unbeknownst to the majority of those involved- is half Veela. To really have an understanding of the events that have occurred through Arthur’s lifetime one must know what sort of woman Loraine is.
She is manipulative. Give the woman an inch and she’ll take a mile. Her sole goal is power, and she will use her children to obtain it. Many of the ill rumors of the other children more than likely originated from her mouth. She isn’t a woman who knows morals, regardless of the magnificent facade she puts up in front of others. To Elliot’s former wives- and later to her youngest son- she makes it clear that they are of no concern to her. Perhaps even if they would disappear.
Knowing this, we can now spin you this sad tale.
When Arthur was first born there was little to control besides his diet and his diapers. Until roughly the age of seven he led a fairly peaceful life, typically enjoying what time he could get with his half siblings and Peter. Though his mother at the time was certainly off-putting even for a child, she was still his mum and he still found enough relief in his big brothers coming home from school to relieve him and Peter from their hardships at home.
He seemed to be especially fond of Iain, often clinging to him whenever he came home for the holidays and absolutely loving the gifts he brought with him. When Iain gifted the his magical portrait to the Kirkland family Arthur would often speak to it when he was away. It brought a sense of comfort until the real thing returned- not that for a while he understood that the portrait wasn’t actually the real thing and became confused when Iain did not recall conversations they’d had.
Perhaps the most enjoyable memory that Arthur recalls is Elliot bringing their family to watch a Quidditch match Iain was in. He remembers Iain getting him a toy broom and watching as he dashed through the sky and charged at other players. He seemed so big and strong back that- not that he doesn’t now. It was just that back then Iain really was invincible. Even when close calls came and Arthur found himself shouting at the top of his lungs to his brother, waving at him and either cheering him or shooting watch out he never once saw Iain fall.
But eventually children must grow. They must learn the harsh realities of this world and accept that not everything can be as they wish.
One day Iain just stopped visiting as much. Slowly it came to practically a stop, and as it did the sudden pressure from his mother began to overwhelm him. Study. Learn. Practice. Memorize. Be perfection. This was day and night. It became routine. Through the years he became accustomed to not going out to spend time with others. Being social only mattered if they were important, and if they were important all that mattered was knowing your manners. There was no need for practice. No reason to “get friendly”. This was life, and life respected knowledge. Knowledge is power. Power is what we seek.
At least, that was what she had taught him.
And, in some cruel fashion, he followed her desires to a T.
… To his own advantage.
Even after having become used to Loraine’s behavior, Arthur never agreed. He knew it was wrong. The way she used spells that forced his fears in front of him when he disobeyed. The way she would go through his books and white out the spells that might protect himself from the night terrors. She was controlling. A monster.
And Arthur feared her enough not to say a word. He kept his thoughts to himself, mulling over them constantly. They instilled a bitterness in him that eventually ebbed away that previously hopeful demeanor and left behind someone who saw no real future ahead of them.
So he obeyed. He studied. He learned. He practiced. He memorized. He spent his life until he got into Hogwarts doing nothing but filling his mind with the necessary information to succeed.
And the Sorting Hat saw the ambition he had set out before himself. An end goal that he would push aside any who stood in his way to achieve. A final resting point if you would… The Sorting Hat saw this and deemed him worthy of the Slytherin House.
Glory be! Arthur Kirkland had achieved something that seemed almost impossible for most of the potential heirs. His mother was overjoyed. She had succeeded! Her son was the ideal heir for the Kirkland family name! And Elliot Kirkland wouldn’t dare leave her. Heavens no, not when her children— er, their children— were doing so good. He couldn’t. He shouldn’t. They could wind up rebellious like Iain or perhaps so utterly pathetic like Donald.
He couldn’t abandon his children once again.
She wouldn’t let him.
For a brief moment he thought he was free, but alas such a thing could not be expected. Of course she kept a close eye on him. Threw a fit when she found out Iain had become a Professor at the school, already scolding Arthur for even having contact with the “wretch who didn’t even care for the title [he] so proudly [held]”. She sent Iain Howlers practically for breathing in the same air as her son. She made all the commotion she could, though nothing changed.
And it brought the slightest relief to him, or at least until he found out she had begun teaching Peter in a similar manner as she had him. He began to fear she would use the same fear tactics. Maybe Peter would simply be obedient? He liked making people happy. That was something Arthur had always admired in him. Even when they were young he felt that his younger brother had so much more strength than he did.
He still envies that in him.
The rest of the time has been a bit of a blur. Nothing really changed. Arthur studies, Loraine pushed, Iain teased, and eventually Peter joined him at Hogwarts… and as expected he became a Gryffindor and Loraine hardly spoke to him.
And, of course, she mentioned to Arthur that he shouldn’t either.
Not that he would ever tell Peter that.
No, he was fine with looking like the cruel older brother that avoided Peter like the plague. He was fine with people seeing him as the person who stuck his nose high in the air and looked down on others.
It meant no one would know how badly he hurt, and perhaps so long as he was “perfect” then Loraine would leave Peter alone.
Yet somehow he’d managed to get dragged into relationships he hadn’t intended.
Iain still inspired him. He still saw that invincible strength and remained in awe of his skills. Jealous of his freedom.
He still watched over Peter like a hawk. He always feared something bad happening to him. Maybe he would break down because of their mother? Surely she would wear him down. She would hurt him… and yet he remained strong too.
Everyone in the Kirkland family had this immense strength that Arthur couldn’t fathom, and he envied it to the point that it made him sick.
And mildly spiteful.
And then some loud American joined in on the ruining of his plans. He pestered him, wouldn’t leave him alone, and for a while that was fine. He was a Slytherin. Arthur was allowed to tolerate his presence.
It was nice…
But it still interfered with his ultimate goal.

All the mental curses he could throw at himself couldn't save him from the impending doom of his head eventually slamming against hard desk as he clocked out for the class. No doubt Iain would give him shite about it for days. It wasn't as though it was the first time it had happened, but so long as he was passing the class with flying colors then what did it matter? It wasn't like he stayed up partying all night. He wasn't even social aside from the social butterfly for a roommate he had. The boy practically talked himself to sleep while Arthur studied through the night. He'd even managed to stay awake long enough to be showered, dressed, and out of the room before Alfred's morning alarm went off. No doubt the other blond would be questioning him later about whether or not he slept.

The terrors that came when the world vanished behind closed lids always seemed to disperse in the presence of these strong people. Maybe even Peter had the same effect. Maybe Donald. Each of his siblings had this sort of magnificent power that he could only dream of holding.

And he wouldn't... Couldn't, really. This was roughly 46 hours into not sleeping and he was feeling weak. All the noise in the world couldn't wake him. The way Iain went on with his lecture talking about potions... It was hard not to fall asleep.
Not that his lectures were boring, mind you. It was just reminiscent of the days he would tell Arthur and Peter stories before they finally slept. Hearing his voice was oddly soothing in some weird, I-still-dislike-you sort of way. He couldn't help it. It was like being wrapped in a warm blanket, given some warm milk, and sent to sleep in the softest bed and yet told not to sleep just yet.
Impossible.
His head jerked up slightly, automatically aware that he was slipping. Not much longer now.
His eyes trailed over to the other students. There were hardly ever any tardies. People loved the idiot and usually always attended his classes whether they were good at Potions or not. They did it for him, and sometimes a few girls did it just to see him. Even Arthur could read some of the notes they passed during class from where he sat.
Handsome. Kiss me. So-and-So Kirkland.
Add a few hearts and they were both giggling and causing Iain to spin around. They all attended class, and yet somehow they were still doing so poorly.

And he wouldn't... Couldn't, really. This was roughly 46 hours into not sleeping and he was feeling weak. All the noise in the world couldn't wake him. The way Iain went on with his lecture talking about potions... It was hard not to fall asleep.
Not that his lectures were boring, mind you. It was just reminiscent of the days he would tell Arthur and Peter stories before they finally slept. Hearing his voice was oddly soothing in some weird, I-still-dislike-you sort of way. He couldn't help it. It was like being wrapped in a warm blanket, given some warm milk, and sent to sleep in the softest bed and yet told not to sleep just yet.
Impossible.
His head jerked up slightly, automatically aware that he was slipping. Not much longer now.
His eyes trailed over to the other students. There were hardly ever any tardies. People loved the idiot and usually always attended his classes whether they were good at Potions or not. They did it for him, and sometimes a few girls did it just to see him. Even Arthur could read some of the notes they passed during class from where he sat.
Handsome. Kiss me. So-and-So Kirkland.
Add a few hearts and they were both giggling and causing Iain to spin around. They all attended class, and yet somehow they were still doing so poorly.

And he was out cold, forehead likely red as it pressed into the cool wood of the table. His arm that had once held his head up slumped to his side, in the process knocking his book covering over to reveal the poor blond face-first on his desk. There was nothing elegant about the Kirkland heir sitting there at that time breathing loudly against the desk. He was just a tired boy. Nothing more, nothing less.
Well, a tired boy... and a potential target, depending on if you're kind or Iain.
