The Carriedo family first rose to prominence in the mid 1400's, helping their country establish a foothold in many lands across the world. They, unlike many of their fellow European Counterparts, had a pleasant relationship with those in the Muggle world who were aware of magic. The Spanish Monarchy had formed a special bond with Carriedo family, and had awarded them lands and titles in return for their abilities. Carriedo children were raised in the same way as other nobility and an emphasis was placed on pursuits such as: equestrian, court etiquette practices, and fencing (known as La Verdadera Destreza), and military practices and history. These studies took place in concert with magical studies, so that members of the family could easily fit in with either culture. Though the Carriedo family was cordial with muggles, fear of potentially diluting their bloodline (and thereby losing their position in the Royal Court) marriage to non-magical partners was expressly prohibited. For nearly 400 years they remained one of the richest and most influential families in the Wizarding world.
As the Spanish empire weakened, so too did the Carriedo dynasty. Decades of infighting lead to a weakening of the patriarchy's authority and to a loss of a unified family. Prominent members of the family began to explore alternative ways to regain power (including dabbling in the forbidden Dark Arts) while others fell into moral decay and corruption. Accusations of bribes, gambling, and even hired assassinations soon began to arise, leading many to doubt whether the family was capable of handling the level of power that they possessed. Finally in 1845, things came to a head when the Carriedo Patriarch, Santiago Guiterre Carriedo, mounted a coup to wrest power from Queen Isabella II of Spain, using Dark Magic to clear a path to the throne. Just as it seemed victory was all but assured, other families in the magical community stepped up and intervened, killing Santiago in the process. The rest of his faction, who survived the attempted coup, were either arrested or committed suicide prior to capture.
The remaining factions of the Carriedo family were stripped of their titles and most of their lands and property, but were allowed to keep their ancestral home and a scant amount of land around it. Since then, the Carriedo name has been in disgrace, and attempts to take positions of power have repeatedly been met with suspicion and distrust by other powerful magical families.
The current patriarch of the family is Gustavo Ferdinand Carriedo and the matriarch is Alandra Lagarre Carriedo. Antonio Hernandez Carriedo is their only child and heir apparent to the legacy of the Carriedo family. He has risen quickly through the ranks of The Durmstrang Institute and has attracted the positive attention of many influential people through his charismatic personality and clear talent. Though some worry that he may follow in the dark footsteps of his infamous ancestor, most believe that a revival of the Carriedo family could occur under the Antonio's leadership.
