Legends and rumors abound about the Roșu family, as many of them true as others are false. It is true that they are an old vampire clan, their lineage stretching back centuries–some say to the times of the Roman Empire, others say since at least from the times of Vlad Țepes. Even the family history is unclear about this, but what is certain is that they were local nobility rooted somewhere in Wallachia since at least the 14th century. They have reportedly been closely intertwined with muggle affairs and held strong affiliations with royal and noble families throughout the ages, though they always worked in the shadows. In antiquity, any breath of vampirism or magic could mean terrible consequences for those involved, and the number of members the Roșus lost to witch hunts and vampire hunts were not few. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the hunts and a particularly disastrous disagreement with a Phanariote family left the Roșu family line nearly extinguished, and they never quite returned to their former power.

For several years, most of the extended members of the Roșus found their own places to settle down–London, Paris, Constantinople, St. Petersburg. The main branch of the family stayed in Romania, though they frequently moved if they detected any hostility or suspicion from locals. It wasn't until the late 18th and early 19th century that things improved for the family again, though aside from joining the War of Independence they stayed relatively obscure.
