[attr="class","profileboxscroll"]Austere to most, Roderich Edelstein is never seen smiling in public or even with company, unless he particularly feels close to them. Due to some past experiences, he has developed a natural distrust of other's intentions, yet he rarely admits it, instead covering his own suspicions with social niceties and his schooled expressions. His voice is measured and controlled, unless he's extremely frustrated, and thus little can be gain from analyzing his tone. He’s developed these features because he’s very used to acting like at diplomat and having a serious and unperturbed face and a way of speaking that revealed few private feelings were some of traits he developed from practice.
He appears detached, and that's the goal. To some it may be unnerving, some admirable with how gracefully he seems to flit through the school halls, as if such grace was bred into him (it sort of was), unaware that he's been shaped to be like this. It's this aloof outer nature of his that makes him a master Occlumens, and because he's an observant and diplomatic person, why he's currently mastering Legilimency. He's not prone to mistakes or foolish actions - but prone to waiting till others make them.
But underneath that aloof face lies a rather insecure young man. That would surprise anyone, right? Such a proud and poised boy such as Roderich being insecure and yet he's driven by them constantly, and it's one of the reasons he's so detached in the first place. It's not one thing - definitely his appearance. He's gotten it into his head that he is very plain-faced and thus does things to accentuate his appearance.
His glasses are not prescription, merely cosmetic, and his hair takes a good part of his routine to get just right. He's also quite sensitive about his body, being rather scrawny for someone of just above average height (when his boots are off) and having no muscle to speak off. He hides this the best he can with layers and uniforms, though he's sneakily modified his uniform with hidden padded shoulders to give the impression he's broader than he actually is.
And then there are the non-physical insecurities, beginning with how he's wretched at expressing himself properly. Sometimes he wonders whether it's a good thing that he appears so aloof all the time because he's not really sure how to actually communicate what he truly feels otherwise. Of course he can talk pretty, but it's all words and not true. For that you'd need to hear him play piano. Or somehow how he can sometimes feel like he's acting, merely playing at being himself. Other faults include his rather lazy approach to things, despite how ambitious he is, and how he, himself, recognizes how quickly judgmental he can be of others he deems 'vulgar'. This inflexibility has cost him several relationships, not to mention how he took liberties with an early friendship that ruined it.
Since Roderich likes to save face, often the way he expresses himself is through creative pursuits, ones that he loves sharing with others for them to appreciate. Actually composing a sonata would be like expressing utter friendship or even love for the particular person he does it for. Because of his stressful studies, Roderich tends to retreat into his hobbies whenever he can, instead of working on said classes. It is generally very hard to pull him from his piano or violin.
It's fitting that his wand is Elm, after all, such a noble dignified wand would work for his outside, and yet on the inside, he has this dual nature (Runespoor Feather) of being calm and yet neurotic, and of course, having decided to master himself, he's proven to be a good master for the other core in his wand (Griffin Feather).
Of course this is all internal - much is expected of Roderich so he does as he needs to, stress and preference of his hobbies be damned. He's also unusual for a Belladone in that he's not exactly a loner despite his way of detaching himself from situations and people, and actually welcomes being in a group. Despite the haughty litle voice that tells him he should aspire to be better, he doesn't believe he can get there on his own merits nor does he want to. If someone lends a helping hand, why should he not take advantage?
This is probably why he does have friends, even if there's always something separating his true self and feelings from them. And he shows his appreciation in the small ways he can - a pastry he managed to make, playing something for them, or sometimes just listening to someone, and attempting to give sound and reasonable advice.
Trivia: He's also a fair duelist, surprisingly, despite the fact he will whine and complain about physical exertion, being a general homebody. But he rarely showcases his technical skill in the subject, preferring to dissolve disputes with persuasion and compromise.

history
[attr="class","profileboxscroll"] Born to a very prominent and ancient Austrian Wizarding family from Styria (though Roderich grew up between Vienna and the Austro-Swiss boarder in summers), Roderich was made aware that as the scion of the family, there were many things expected of him.
Like striving to do better. Partly this was the fault of his paternal grandmother - a muggle-born who married into their ancient pureblood family and therefore 'sullied' the line - not on account of blood purity, though that may be part of it, but also due to the fact she was also the daughter of mere shoemakers. Being a truky exceptional woman as well as a social climber, it was she who maintained that Roderich must be 'perfect' so that his children could proudly maintain that they came from proper stock, unlike Roderich who cannot completely say that.
Of course, being 'plain' ruined this. For whatever reason, distant relatives often remarked how sadly unremarkable he looked - mostly due to Roderich being a sullen child when around adults. A sensitive boy, he internalized this and began looking for ways to shine - finding music to be his way of proving just how remarkable he was, at first. Then he fell in love with it, and it became less of a way to show something he was good at and a way to see the world and process his thoughts.
His parents were delighted either way, plain or not, Roderich was well-spoken, bright, and eager in his own way to please them. Despite all the pressure on him, it was a rather normal and pleasant childhood until the time to go to school drew nearer. Roderich's main playmates had always been his distant Swiss cousins and then some other friends. However his distant cousin and best friend Vash, who Roderich, in plain unsensitivity and snobbishness, had been dismissing and taking for granted, finally tore Roderich a 'new one', exposing all his faults to him. Roderich, at that age, had never been so self-ware until he had pointed out to him each and every character flaw to him before breaking their friendship. As that Vash was going to Durmstrang, Roderich begged to go to another in order to avoid him, and at the same time internalized all the criticism.
Thus, on the first day of school in Beauxbatons, Roderich arrived a changed boy. His teachers liked him well-enough, he was mostly responsible though not pushy for their attention. His classmates were a little unnerved by an eleven year-old who acted like he was forty, who'd politely rebuff most of them and prefer the company of a violin. He wasn't disliked but somehow managed to intimidate them into calling him the 'little master'.
And that's how the years passed. of course there are some students Roderich has warmed up to, his distant cousin Lili being one of them, though he still has that habit of disappearing into his music and studies. Worried that people could see how uncomfortable he truly was with himself, and also finding some trouble with his wand, he taught himself Occlumency and is now working of Legilimency. Dueling came naturally, surprisingly, encouraged by his family though there is some personal enjoyment of it on his end. And, of course, his music.
Sometimes Roderich wonders why he still lives by that argument that happened when he was a mere child and not at the cusp of adulthood. Or why he does as his family expects him to, merely playing at being a great son as much as he can, while not truly enjoying much of it.
Whatever it is, this Triwizard tournament is a welcome change in routine for him. Not that he expects to compete, isn't even sure he can, but perhaps he can find something else here. Some meaning he hasn't yet found.

[attr="class","profileboxscroll"] [FROM TIMELESS NATIONS, CANON RP]
The renewed chatter of people behind him - did that man stop talking? - almost brought Roderich out of his focus on the child. The girl's eyes widened as she saw him, scanning him. Roderich could tell, almost feel that she understood his confusion, felt that pull of familiarity.
He hadn't looked very much like his brothers' as a child due to color and as an adult, he was usually dwarfed by them in build. It was the small features - the jaw, the nose, his sideburns - that spoke of his relationship to them. And yet, as he searched his memory of those foggy first years he could remember clearly recognizing them as kin, especially his closest brother. This...carbon copy of him, she was obviously his in some way.
The child nodded and smiled up at him, confirming what he had thought about her. So this tiny, mud-covered little girl was Kugel Mugel. His eyes quickly darted back at the man speaking behind him. Strangeness aside, how dare that man present his art project (and Nation) and not bother to care for her. If this was as much as an introduction to the nation as an art exhibit, then why did she look like she never met a brush?
His nostrils flared in irritation as he began thinking of ways to politely hammer in the fact that this was most definitely child neglect regardless of her nation status. If left alone like this, the child would undoubtedly grow (if she did) to be wild and uncouth, and who knew what else due to her eccentric origins! And even worse, he was letting it happen in public. In the Prater. Where tourists might see.
Roderich had never felt extremely paternal towards his wards/conquered nations. He rarely had to raise them and believed in treating children strictly, with little room for compromise. He'd always been immune to the charms of very small children, finding them bothersome rather than adorable or heart-warming.
It was strange then that he had the impulse to snatch this child and drag her off for a long bath and to get her decent shoes - because who would let a child go barefoot with winter knocking on the door?
Kugel Mugel stood up and walked towards him, in that wobbly manner children have when they haven't still figured out how to keep both feet firmly planted on the ground, raising a chubby finger to point at him as she stepped towards him, not seeming to mind the cold stone and dirt beneath her bare feet.
"A..Aus..tria?"
Her voice was high-pitched and soft, like she wasn't used to using it or forming words, increasing Roderich's worry. Kugel Mugel was scarcely three in years - both human and nation. The child nation was too young, too young to be out here unattended.
He crouched down to better meet her eyes and waited for her to make her way to him.
"Yes, I am Österreich. Do you have another name...a human name? And where are your shoes?" Roderich asked her, gentler than he would usually be with a child nation. "Why is your boss letting you out like this?" He added, less gently and more obviously irritated. Surely, it wouldn't be on him to make sure the child looked presentable, would it?
